Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Code (PDTC) Standards in OBD2 Testing
Since July 1, 2019, Smog Check inspections using the BAR-OIS system include a check for Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (PDTCs). PDTCs are similar to regular Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) but are more persistent. Unlike regular DTCs, PDTCs cannot be erased using a scan tool or by disconnecting the vehicle’s battery. They are designed to remain until the OBD2 system itself verifies that the underlying issue has been resolved and clears the code automatically.

For vehicles manufactured between 1996 and 1999, the BAR-97 EIS inspection system is used.
