Foxwell NT301 OBD2 Scanner Review: The Unexpectedly Impressive Code Reader

If you had told me I’d be writing a glowing Foxwell NT301 review today, chuckling to myself about how impressed I am, I would have been seriously doubtful. Honestly, when the NT301 arrived, I had second thoughts. I even wondered if it was going to be a waste of my time.

Unboxing the package, my first impression of the NT301 was that it seemed bulky, possibly larger than necessary, much like the Konnwei KW850. At best, I thought it might just become another glove box option, similar to my existing Ancel AD410.

But nothing could have prepared me for the surprise that awaited when I plugged this code reader into my car’s OBD II port and reluctantly began testing.

The Foxwell NT301 genuinely surprised me, earning the title of ‘queen of OBD surprises’ in my book. My initial lukewarm attitude quickly transformed into admiration, and I internally acknowledged the respect it deserves within my collection of OBD II code readers.

However, like any product, the Foxwell NT301 isn’t without its drawbacks, which I’ll address later in this review. These points will provide a balanced perspective on the code reader, helping you decide if it’s the right OBD II scanner for your needs or if you should explore other options.

As mentioned, I had mixed feelings leading up to the NT301’s arrival. Looking at its dimensions and comparing it to my Ancel AD410, I questioned my decision.

Still, curiosity pushed me to give it a fair shot. That spontaneous decision proved wise a few days later. Despite my initial lack of excitement about the physical unit, plugging it into my vehicle sparked a level of satisfaction I hadn’t anticipated.

Holding the NT301 for the first time, it felt less bulky than its dimensions suggested. I could comfortably operate it with one hand. I immediately noticed the keys – soft, responsive, and with a satisfying bounce-back, a feature lacking in the Ancel AD410.

The color display and the overall feel of the code reader in my hands instantly shifted my perception. I became eager to explore its features.

The packaging was simple: a transparent plastic clamshell, showcasing the NT301 front and center, with an update cable and user manual tucked behind.

Functions & Capabilities of the Foxwell NT301

The Foxwell NT301 is, as you know, a basic OBD2 code reader, similar in function to the Foxwell NT201. Its strength lies in how effectively it performs its core tasks: code reading and OBD II diagnostics.

So, what did I discover when I put it to work?

1. Basic Code Reading & DTC Clearing

When connected to a working OBDII port, the Foxwell NT301 quickly retrieves OBD II error codes, if present. Crucially, it provides a summary of their meaning.

For instance, the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0113 might be meaningless to the average driver or DIY mechanic. However, the NT301’s explanation, Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High, instantly clarifies the issue. This explanation offers a clear starting point for understanding and addressing the problem.

Need to clear codes after a repair? It’s straightforward. There’s a dedicated button for code erasure, or you can find the option within the menu.

2. Dedicated Home Button for Easy Navigation

A unique and surprisingly uncommon feature on today’s OBD II scanners is the Foxwell NT301’s dedicated home button.

If you need to quickly exit your current operation and return to the main menu, there’s no fumbling with multiple buttons. Simply press and hold the ‘home’ or ‘return’ button. This immediately clears your current screen and takes you back to the main menu, ready for a fresh start.

This is a time-saving feature, especially valuable in the often-stressful environment of DIY or professional auto repair.

3. Live Data Stream for Real-time Diagnostics

Live data is crucial for understanding a vehicle’s real-time health. Some issues, like a blocked air intake causing excessive fuel consumption, might not trigger a standard DTC code immediately.

Scanning for standard DTCs alone won’t detect these kinds of problems. However, analyzing live data and comparing Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor readings to expected values can quickly pinpoint areas needing attention.

This is why I believe live data functionality is a minimum requirement for any useful code reader. If a unit lacks this, its diagnostic value is severely limited.

Fortunately, the Foxwell NT301 includes this essential feature, enhancing its diagnostic capabilities.

4. DTC Lookup with Enhanced Information

Adding to its functionality, the NT301 features a DTC lookup function. This is essentially a built-in library of DTCs where you can input a code, press ‘ENTER,’ and get its definition.

However, this DTC lookup is more advanced than just simple definitions. It goes beyond just stating the code’s meaning. For unfamiliar codes or for casual DIYers less familiar with DTCs, simple definitions can still be confusing.

The NT301’s DTC lookup provides possible causes and contributing factors for each code. This makes it easier to understand not just the code itself, but also the potential underlying issues triggering it.

Other Standout Features of the Foxwell NT301

Beyond the expected basic functions of a code reader, the Foxwell NT301 boasts several notable and satisfying features that elevate it above the ordinary.

These features distinguish the NT301 and set it apart in its class.

1. Built-in DTC Explanations – No Google Needed

DTCs are, by their nature, diagnostic trouble codes. Without understanding what these codes mean and what to investigate, a DIYer or car owner with a code reader is still somewhat reliant on a mechanic’s interpretation.

To overcome this, many car owners and DIYers resort to Google or other search engines to decipher DTCs.

The Foxwell NT301 eliminates this step by providing the code’s meaning immediately upon retrieval.

But it goes further: it also provides a list of potential causes for the DTC when you press ‘ENTER’.

This thoughtful and intelligent addition truly sets the NT301 apart from other basic code readers. It’s a feature that should be standard in all code readers, regardless of their complexity.

2. Dedicated One-Press Erase Button

The ability to clear DTCs is a standard feature on nearly every basic code reader. It’s not groundbreaking.

However, very few code readers have a dedicated button specifically for this function, eliminating the need to navigate through menus.

This dedicated erase button is a genuine convenience and time-saver. Simply highlight the DTCs you want to clear and press the button – codes gone.

This can even be done quickly while waiting at a stoplight – that’s convenient.

3. Robust Protective Outer Case

OBD II code readers often endure rough treatment. From accidental drops to handling with greasy or dirty hands, few are treated delicately.

Consequently, many code readers don’t last long. By the third year, many units are often retired due to damage.

The Foxwell NT301 is built to withstand this. It features a protective outer case, a soft yet strong coating over its standard casing. This coating absorbs impacts from drops and repels dirt that would otherwise directly contact the code reader’s body.

It’s a simple yet brilliant design element for durability.

4. Satisfyingly Responsive, Large Keys

Sometimes, after a frustrating car issue, you just need a bit of tactile satisfaction. The Foxwell NT301’s large, bouncy keys provide just that.

They are soft to the touch, depress easily, and offer a satisfying click. When released, the keys spring back up with a pleasant bounce.

It’s a small detail, but on days when dealing with car troubles is stressful, the satisfying feel of these keys can be a welcome small comfort.

Foxwell NT301 Vehicle Compatibility

The Foxwell NT301 is compatible with most post-1996 vehicles I’ve tested. It consistently performs reliably, delivering at least 80% of its advertised functions.

However, I haven’t tested the NT301 with newer hybrids (including plug-in hybrids), electric vehicles, or high-performance sports cars. Nor have I tested it with luxury brands like Rolls Royce.

If you own one of these vehicle types, it’s advisable to contact Foxwell directly to confirm compatibility with your specific make and model before purchasing the code reader.

Limitations of the Foxwell NT301

It’s not all perfect with the Foxwell NT301. Like any product, it has limitations. While not deal-breakers, it’s important to be aware of them.

1. Keys Are Not Backlit

While I haven’t personally used a backlit code reader before, and they might not even be common, given the NT301’s solid build, backlit keys would be a logical enhancement, even if it slightly increased the price.

The keys’ excellent tactile feel and responsiveness are great, but backlighting would be a welcome addition for use in low-light conditions.

2. It’s a Basic OBD2 Code Reader

Despite its strengths, the NT301 is still a basic code reader. It lacks the ability to scan additional vehicle modules like the transmission or ABS systems.

While these modules are generally reliable in well-engineered vehicles, it’s reassuring to scan all modules to ensure there are no hidden issues.

This is particularly true when troubleshooting elusive problems where you’re hoping for any error code to appear.

3. The Cable Could Be Longer…

Lastly, the cable isn’t the longest available. It’s certainly long enough for comfortable use in any vehicle, regardless of driver’s seat position.

However, after using the Konnwei KW850 with its exceptionally long cable, I appreciated the freedom to stand outside the vehicle while using the scanner.

Now, I find myself noticing cable length when using other OBD II code readers. It’s a minor point, but once you’ve experienced the convenience of a longer cable…

Alternatives to Consider

The Foxwell NT301 is a reliable code reader. However, if you prefer something smaller, with fewer buttons, or a more compact palm-sized option, other choices exist.

Consider the Ancel AD410 code reader. It’s been my trusted glove box scanner for over five years, and I have no regrets.

If you need something more powerful yet budget-friendly, the TopDon TopScan is worth exploring. It’s a small, pocket-sized device but surprisingly capable, able to scan ABS, transmission, and other modules, making it suitable for DIYers and professionals alike.
