The BIM-01-2 OBD-II (J1850/CAN) Interface is your direct connection to your vehicle’s engine computer, designed to seamlessly extract vital engine and transmission data. This innovative interface plugs directly into the standard engine diagnostic port, commonly known as the OBD-II port, making it a perfect solution for “connect and cruise” applications where accessing real-time vehicle information is crucial. Specifically engineered for Dakota Digital Instrument Systems*, the BIM-01-2 delivers a wealth of data to enhance your vehicle monitoring experience.
Unleash Real-Time Vehicle Insights with OBD2 Connectivity
With broad compatibility across many vehicles (see compatibility notes below), the BIM-01-2 provides access to essential data points, allowing you to keep a close eye on your vehicle’s performance. The following data parameters are typically available on most compatible vehicles:
- Speedometer: Accurate speed readings for precise monitoring.
- Tachometer: Engine RPM data to track engine performance.
- Engine Temperature: Real-time coolant temperature to prevent overheating.
- Check Engine Indicator: Status of the check engine light for diagnostics.
Beyond these standard readings, the BIM-01-2 can also access vehicle-specific data, depending on your vehicle’s computer (ECM) and sensor configuration. This may include:
- Intake Air Temperature: Monitor the temperature of air entering the engine.
- Transmission Temperature: Keep track of transmission fluid temperature to prevent damage.
- Ambient Air Temperature: External temperature readings.
- Gear Position: Display current gear selection.
- Oil Pressure: Engine oil pressure monitoring.
- Boost Pressure: For turbocharged or supercharged vehicles.
It’s important to note that while the BIM-01-2 is designed to access a wide range of data, the availability and accuracy of certain parameters like Intake Temp, Transmission Temp, Ambient Air Temp, Oil Pressure, Boost, and Gear Position are dependent on your vehicle’s ECM and the presence of functioning OEM sensors. Dakota Digital cannot guarantee the availability of these vehicle-specific data points as it is dictated by the factory or aftermarket ECM and sensor configuration.
Compatibility and Key Considerations for your Connect and Cruise OBD2 Setup
*The BIM-01-2 is specifically engineered to decode information transmitted by your vehicle’s ECM via the OBD-II port. It is designed to supply this decoded data to Dakota Digital Instrument Systems including the GRFX, RTX, HDX, VHX, and VFD3 series that utilize a black plastic control module. For older BIM-compatible control boxes equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack BIM input, the 394194 adaptor harness is required. Please be aware that earlier instrument systems featuring an aluminum control module are not compatible with BIM connectivity.
**The BIM-01-2 is compatible with J1850 and CAN OBD-II protocols only. Specifically, it supports OBD-II protocols SAE J1850 VPW, SAE J1850 PWM, and ISO 15765 CAN 500k 11-bit identifiers that adhere to the SAE J1979 PID protocol.
***Please note that GM Connect & Cruise packages do not transmit gear position data, which will prevent the BIM-01-2 from displaying gear position information in these specific applications.
