Are Cen-Tech OBD2 Scanner Updates Really Necessary?

As someone who enjoys tackling car maintenance at home, I’ve relied on a Cen-Tech OBD2 scan tool for years. Like many DIYers, I opted for a scan tool over a basic code reader thinking that software updates would keep it relevant. However, it seems Harbor Freight no longer carries Cen-Tech scan tools, raising questions about the availability of future updates. While Autel is rumored to be associated with Cen-Tech scanners, attempts to update my tool using Autel’s software have been unsuccessful.

This leaves me wondering – are OBD2 scanner updates truly crucial? My Cen-Tech scanner’s software is likely from around 2016. If I were to get a newer car, say a 2019 model, would my current scanner still be sufficient for most common diagnostic tasks? Or would the outdated software miss out on important features and data from the newer vehicle? Understanding the importance of OBD2 scanner updates will determine whether I keep my trusty Cen-Tech tool or invest in a more up-to-date option. Let’s delve into whether keeping your OBD2 scanner current is actually necessary for effective car diagnostics.
