Shipping Your PCM for Service? Here’s What You Need to Know

When it comes to car repairs, sometimes you need expert help, especially with complex components like your Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If you’re considering sending your PCM in for testing or repair, perhaps related to reprogramming needs that go beyond simple OBD2 scanner capabilities, understanding the shipping process is crucial. At TechCarUSA, we make this as straightforward as possible. This guide will walk you through everything you need to ensure your PCM arrives safely and your service is processed without delays.

Sending your PCM to us for testing or repair involves a round trip shipping process. The shipping cost you see covers sending your module to our facility and its safe return back to you after service. If you’re purchasing a PCM upfront, the shipping fee covers sending the new unit to you and the return of your old core module to us.

Simplified Shipping with Our Prepaid Label

To simplify things, once you place your order with TechCarUSA, we’ll promptly email you a prepaid shipping label. This label is ready to print and affix to your package. We also provide information on the nearest drop-off locations, such as UPS Stores or Post Offices, making it convenient to send your PCM. Our negotiated shipping rates are designed to be more economical, typically 15%-20% lower than if you were to purchase a label directly from a shipping carrier. We aim to make the process easier and more cost-effective for you, especially when you need to send in a module for diagnostics or return a core for a refund.

Alternative Shipping Option

If you prefer not to use our round trip shipping service, that’s perfectly fine. Simply bypass the online checkout and payment process on our website. Instead, carefully pack your PCM, include a completed Customer & Vehicle Information sheet inside the box, and ship it to us using your preferred carrier. We will then process your request and send you an invoice for the services rendered.

The Importance of Proper Packaging

Regardless of how you choose to ship, properly packing your PCM is paramount. Damage during transit due to inadequate packaging is the shipper’s responsibility. Follow these essential packing guidelines:

  • Use a Sturdy Cardboard Box: Avoid flimsy envelopes. A rigid cardboard box is crucial for protection.
  • Generous Cushioning: Wrap your PCM thoroughly in bubble wrap or use crumpled paper to create a cushion on all sides within the box. This prevents movement and absorbs shocks during shipping.
  • Rigid Box Even with Padded Envelopes: If you opt for a padded envelope for extra internal protection, it must still be placed inside a rigid cardboard box for external structural integrity.

Module Preparation Before Shipping

To prevent damage and ensure efficient testing, please prepare your module as follows:

  • FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module): Remove any rubber grommets before sending your FICM.
  • IDM (Injector Driver Module): Do not include the steel mounting bracket when shipping your IDM.
  • PCM (Powertrain Control Module): Crucially, remove any plastic mounting brackets from your PCM before shipping. If your PCM has an aftermarket performance chip, please send it along with the PCM, either installed or securely placed in a resealable bag. This allows us to test the PCM with your chip, if applicable.

Essential Documentation: Customer & Vehicle Information Sheet

To process your service request efficiently, it’s vital to include a completed Customer & Vehicle Information Sheet with your shipment. You can download and print this form from our website. Please fill it out completely and accurately. Missing information will necessitate us contacting you, which will inevitably delay the processing of your order.

Shipping Carrier Options

You have the flexibility to choose your preferred shipping carrier to send your module to us. We accept shipments via major carriers such as FedEx, UPS, USPS, and DHL. (While carrier pigeons are mentioned for humorous effect in the original text, we recommend sticking to reliable modern shipping methods!).

For sending modules back to you, TechCarUSA primarily uses UPS to ensure reliable and trackable delivery.

Chip Handling for Testing

If you are sending a performance chip with your PCM for testing purposes, it is imperative that the chip is either installed in the PCM or placed in a resealable bag and included within the package. This precaution is necessary to prevent your chip from being lost or damaged amongst the packing materials during transit.

By following these shipping guidelines, you can ensure your PCM arrives safely at TechCarUSA for the expert service it needs. Whether you’re looking for diagnostics, repair, or even PCM reprogramming beyond the capabilities of standard OBD2 tools, we are here to help.
