Aukey Dash Cam OBD2 Hard Wire Kit: A User Experience Review

As a user of the Aukey dash cam and OBD2 hard wire kit, I wanted to share my experience, particularly focusing on the motion detection capabilities. Initially, I was very impressed with the video quality from both the front and rear cameras. Even when vehicles were in motion, number plates were clearly visible. While there was some glare from license plates at night, I assumed this was common with most dash cams, as this was my first one. For the price, the 1060p front and rear capture quality of the Aukey dash cam is undeniably excellent.

However, my main issue arose with the motion detection feature. I discovered that the motion detection relies on an internal sensor within the camera itself, rather than utilizing the camera’s visual input to detect movement. This meant that to use motion detection, it had to be manually activated each time I parked the car. If left active while driving, the camera would randomly turn on and off, leading to gaps in recording.

I had installed the Aukey dash cam using their OBD2 Hard Wire kit, which is designed to provide continuous power for parking mode while also incorporating a low voltage cut-off to prevent battery drain. This hard wire kit also includes its own “in-line” motion detector, which the instructions recommend placing near the top of the windscreen. Unfortunately, the motion detection never worked reliably for me. During rainy conditions, the camera would record continuously, yet it was inconsistent in detecting actual motion events around the vehicle.

The issue might stem from a conflict between having both the in-line motion detector from the hard wire kit and the internal sensor within the Aukey dash cam operating simultaneously. It’s possible that using a different OBD2 hard wire kit, perhaps one not manufactured by Aukey, might yield better results. There are certainly other OBD2 kits available on the market.

If a more reliable motion detection and parking mode are not critical requirements, then this Aukey dual dash cam setup is a very good option, primarily due to its impressive video quality for the price. However, I am now considering upgrading to a BlackVue 750s, which boasts a buffered parking mode. While I have read some mixed reviews regarding its video quality, I intend to try it personally to assess if it better meets my needs for parking surveillance.
