I’m diving into the world of turbocharging my Ford 300 inline-six engine and looking for some guidance, especially when it comes to tuning. Being new to this forum but having spent time reading through the archives, it seems like this is the go-to place for information on these engines. I’m working on a 1969 Ford F250 and planning to install a turbocharged 300 with a ZF5 speed transmission.
I’ve already started collecting parts, including an OBD2 mass air EFI system sourced from a junkyard. Interestingly, from what I’ve gathered here, it appears that many enthusiasts tend to avoid the 1996-only mass air setup. This is a bit puzzling to me. My background includes some EFI experience; I’ve helped a friend convert his 5.0 Mustang to mass air and understand the benefits, especially for modifications. In the 4.6 Ford world, OBD2 is undeniably superior to OBD1 for performance and tuning. This led me to believe that the 1996 OBD2 mass air sequential injection 300 would be a highly desirable starting point, offering features that are often sought-after upgrades.
So, my main question is: why the hesitation towards this specific EFI system? Is it simply due to its rarity or being different from the more common EFI 300 setups? Or are there underlying reasons I should be aware of?
Assuming this system is viable, my primary concern now shifts to tuning, especially for a turbo application, which is new territory for me. Could I effectively use a plug and play tuner to manage this setup? I’m considering options like Hypertech or Edge Evolution programmers. I have an air-fuel ratio meter and a scan tool to monitor sensor data, but I’m unsure if these plug and play tuners, typically designed for naturally aspirated engines, can be adapted for a turbo build. Specifically, can they handle custom fuel curves and timing adjustments needed for forced induction? Ideally, I’d like to lock the timing as I do on my carbureted 390, but I’m open to suggestions.
My ultimate goal is to achieve power levels comparable to my 425hp 390-powered 1968 F250 with this turbocharged inline-six. Any insights on the Best Obd2 Plug N Play Tuners or general tuning strategies for this project would be greatly appreciated.
