Simple DIY: Modify Your BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII Adapter for Switched Power

Enhance your experience with your Bafx Products Bluetooth Obd2 Obdii adapter by easily modifying it to draw power only when your vehicle is on or in ACC mode. This modification, perfect for users of apps like Turbo3’s, ensures a reliable connection while preventing unnecessary battery drain when your car is off. This guide will walk you through a straightforward 15-minute process to convert your adapter to switched 12V power.

To begin, you’ll need to access the internal components of your BAFX Bluetooth OBD2 adapter.

  1. Accessing the Internals: Locate the four screws hidden beneath the blue adhesive label on your adapter. Carefully peel off the label to reveal these screws. Remove all four screws to open the casing.

  2. Disconnecting the Connector: Once the screws are removed, gently separate the two halves of the adapter’s case. Inside, you’ll see a white connector linking the OBDII connector to the PC board. Unplug this white connector to detach the OBDII component.

  3. OBDII Connector Removal and Wire Modification: With the connector detached, you can now lift the OBDII connector completely out of its housing. Identify pin 16 (constant 12V) and pin 8 (switched ACC 12V). In most layouts, pin 16 is situated at the top left, and pin 8 at the bottom left, making this modification simple. Carefully move the wire from pin 16 to pin 8. This crucial step reroutes the power source.

  4. Reassembly: After moving the wire, place the OBDII connector back into the case and reconnect the white connector to the PC board. Carefully reassemble the two halves of the case, securing them with the four screws you removed earlier. Be mindful of the internal LEDs during reassembly to prevent any damage.

  5. Final Touches: You can now reapply the blue label or leave it off, depending on your preference.

Your BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII adapter is now modified for switched power. It will function exactly as before, but will only power on when your vehicle is running or in ACC mode. This modification is fully compatible and works seamlessly, ensuring your adapter is only active when you need it, effectively preventing any potential battery drain.
