We used a 2014 Audi A4 Allroad as our test vehicle over several weeks, conducting tests both in the garage and on the road. Our testing methodology included:
- VIN Verification: Ensuring each scanner could accurately read and report the vehicle identification number (VIN).

- Live Data Monitoring: We monitored engine parameters and vital systems while the car was running, evaluating the clarity and accuracy of live data displays (numbers, graphs, gauges).
- Fault Code Diagnosis: We simulated a fault by disconnecting the engine oil temperature sensor and assessed each scanner’s ability to:
- Detect and report the fault code (DTC).
- Provide a clear description of the fault.
- Allow for easy clearing of the fault code after fixing the issue.
- On-Road Testing: We drove the test vehicle with each scanner connected to assess real-time data monitoring during driving conditions, paying attention to data refresh rates and display stability.
- Usability Assessment: We evaluated ease of setup, menu navigation, user interface intuitiveness, and overall user-friendliness of each scanner and its companion app (if applicable).
- Value Analysis: Finally, we assessed the overall value of each scanner by balancing its performance in all tests against its price, features, warranty, and long-term ownership costs (including subscription fees, if any). This comprehensive evaluation allowed us to identify the OBD2 scanners that offer the best balance of performance, features, and price – the best OBD2 scanner value.
