Next, you’ll want to use a multimeter to check the DC voltages at the OBD2 diagnostic socket. Battery voltage, essential for powering external scan tools, is supplied to the socket via Terminal 30F. Additionally, ensure proper grounding by checking both the load earth (Terminal 31L) and the electronics earth (Terminal 31E) at the socket. These grounds, along with the battery voltage, are crucial for the OBD2 port’s operation.

Another potential issue could be the terminating resistor, which should have a resistance of approximately 120 ohms between Pin 6 and Pin 14 (the CAN bus diagnostic connection). A faulty resistor can disrupt communication. Furthermore, while power issues are common, remember that a fully functional OBD2 port for modern vehicles like the 2016 BMW X3 may require up to 5 pins to support Ethernet connections, not just power. Therefore, the problem could also lie within the socket itself or the terminating resistor.
